Enter the grams you own in each karat to see the pure gold equivalent, whether it reaches the nisab, and the zakat due in grams and riyals at today's price.
Pure gold = weight × karat ÷ 24, so 100 g of 21K holds 87.5 g of pure gold. If the total pure gold reaches the nisab and a lunar year has passed, zakat is one fortieth: 2.5% of the pure gold, valued at the pure gram price on the day it falls due.
What is the gold nisab in grams?
The nisab is twenty mithqal. Many contemporary scholars, including Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen, put it at 85 g of pure gold on a 4.25 g mithqal, the nisab this calculator uses. Sheikh Abdulaziz Ibn Baz put it at 92 g. An 85 g nisab equals about 97.14 g of 21K or 113.33 g of 18K.
Jewellery worn for personal use
Zakat is due on bars, gold coins and trade gold that reach the nisab after a full year. Scholars differ on permitted jewellery worn for personal use: Saudi Arabia's Permanent Committee and Sheikh Ibn Baz held it zakatable once it reaches the nisab, as do the Hanafis, while the majority of the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools hold that no zakat is due on it. The calculator applies zakat to everything you enter; if you follow the second view, leave out jewellery you wear.
Silver and other wealth
The silver nisab is 595 g of pure silver; its value today is shown beside the calculator. Many scholars, including the Permanent Committee, combine gold with silver and trade goods to complete the nisab. This calculator counts gold only; if it falls short and you hold other wealth, ask a scholar about your case.
Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab for 21K gold in grams?
With an 85 g pure gold nisab, the 21K nisab is about 97.14 g (85 × 24 ÷ 21). With Sheikh Ibn Baz's 92 g it is about 105.14 g.
What is the gold nisab in riyals today?
Nisab value = 85 × today's pure gold gram price, shown live in the calculator. It moves with the price; what counts is its value when the hawl completes.
How much zakat is due on 100 g of 21K gold?
It holds 87.5 g of pure gold, above the 85 g nisab, so zakat is 2.5% of it: about 2.19 g of pure gold or its value on the due date. On the 92 g estimate it does not reach the nisab on its own.
Is zakat due on jewellery I wear?
Scholars differ: the Permanent Committee and Sheikh Ibn Baz held it zakatable once it reaches the nisab, while the majority of the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools hold it is not. Gold held for trade is zakatable.
Do I use the purchase price?
No. Gold is valued on the day the hawl completes, higher or lower than what you paid, as Sheikh Ibn Baz stated. Zakat may be paid in gold or its value in cash.
Do stones count in the weight?
No, count the gold only. According to Sheikh Ibn Baz, diamonds and gems worn as jewellery carry no zakat unless held for trade.
Note
This calculator is an estimate to help with the arithmetic, not a fatwa. For rulings on your own case, such as worn jewellery, combining wealth or when your hawl starts, ask a trusted scholar or the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta. The price used is the global raw gold price converted to riyals and may differ from shop prices.
